VARIETY'S the word for this weekend's Gates of Brockenhurst Hill Climb Championship at Gurston Down.

The entry varies from classic to hi-tech with special classes for Morgans and Porsches on Saturday and MGs and GTD 40s on Sunday. Then there are the modified production cars that range from highly-tuned Minis to Lotus Exiges, Caterhams, Westfields and Ford Escorts.

The sports racing cars and single-seater racing cars, which are often purpose-made for speed hillclimbing, will be out in force with classes for cars with 600cc engines through to mighty four-litre, 600 horsepower V8s.

Most of the south's top hill climbers will be in action, including Gurston champ Tim Stevens in his Lotus Exige.

Watch out, too, for debuting father and son Ian and Karl Chard from New Milton, up against current Top Ten Challenge leader Duncan Barnes from Totton.

Potentially the fastest cars compete in the over 2000cc racing car class and former Gurston Top Ten Challenge winner Karl Davison from Salisbury fields his mighty 4.0 litre Gould GR37 after a gap year in 2003.

The action starts from 8.30am each day.
