SCORES of Hampshire veterans were able to take part in the D-Day commemorations thanks to ferry giant P&O.

The momentous occasion saw veterans mingle with their former brothers in arms and world leaders on the very ground in Normandy where Allied troops fought and died in their thousands.

Many travelled with P&O, in full uniform, complete with medals, from its Hampshire base at Portsmouth. The company even employed a five-piece band called Tabasco Jazz which entertained veterans and their families during the crossing with songs from the 40s which even lured some of them onto the dance floor.

P&O carried more than 5,000 veterans and supporters for a special half price deal on tickets booked through regimental associations.

A P&O spokesman told of the pride the company felt at carrying such venerable passengers. A huge convoy of historic military vehicles were also carried over for the celebrations.

Brian Rees said: "We were very proud to carry the war veterans on our ships and it was an honour to see so many brave men on a journey back to their past to commemorate what was a very moving and heroic battle that changed the course of history.

"What they did, and why they were here, was certainly not taken lightly by staff who treated them with the respect they deserve."
