SAINTS could be weighing up a move for American international DaMarcus Beasley.

Sources in America say the 22-year-old left winger, who currently plays for Chicago Fire in the MLS, has been tracked by Saints for some time and that the club are considering making a bid for his services.

The rumours have been further fuelled by Saints chairman Rupert Lowe NOT denying an interest in the player - as he normally does with definite no-goes.

Lowe confirmed: "We looked at him last year but have not made any approach."

With 27 USA caps and four international goals to his name, Beasley fits the mould of an experienced foreign international that Paul Sturrock has identified as the calibre of player he wants to bring in.

Beasley, nicknamed 'Jitterbug', can play on either wing but is primarily regarded as left-sided and is rated as one of the best young players in America.

He followed his brother, Jamar, in missing out on college to sign as a professional footballer, initially joining Los Angeles Galaxy.

In 2000 he moved to Chicago Fire before playing for Galaxy himself. There he scored six goals in 11 games, helping the side to win the US Open Cup.

His achievements that year were honoured when he was named in the prestigious '100 rising International Stars' list.

After a disappointing 2001, with the exception of making his international debut against China, Beasley picked up again in 2002, playing in the World Cup against Portugal, South Korea and Poland and scoring three times in 19 games for the Fire.

Last year he reached further heights with seven goals in leading the Fire to the MLS Cup final.

He is the second player Saints have admitted an interest in this summer with Dutch defender Jelle van Damme also under consideration.

But Saints have denied any interest in Vladimir Smicer (Liverpool), Jonathan Greening (Middlesbrough), Thomas Radzinski (Everton), Ricardo Sousa (Boavista) and Michael Bridges (Newcastle).
