TEN men have been jailed following ugly rioting at the Saints and Pompey south coast soccer derby in Ports-mouth earlier this year.

All defendants received prison sentences of between nine and 18 months yesterday after admitting their parts in the rampage.

In addition, each of the men were banned from attending football matches for either six or seven years.

Portsmouth Crown Court was told how police had been expecting trouble, with 400 officers drafted in to man the Fratton Park clash in March.

However, what they witnessed were the worst attacks on police ever seen in Portsmouth.

Jailing all ten defendants yesterday, the judge told them the scale of violence and disorder had been huge and sustained.

Although those involved would call themselves football supporters, few had actually been to the match, he said.

As reported in the Daily Echo at the time, police officers were bombarded, shops were looted and cars were attacked.

Police have already arrested more than 30 people in connection with the rioting - many as a result of identifying suspects caught on closed-circuit police cameras.

Today detectives warned more arrests would be carried out.

Det Chief Insp Gerry Wheeler, leading the inquiry, said: "These people have let down themselves and the city and I think the judge reinforced that. Clearly their early admissions helped them and their sentences reflect that also.

"There are more people being arrested. They will be charged and they will be going to court to face the same offences."
