Feats in the Premiership dominate TV footage and newspaper columns so much that younger followers of the game are under the impression that not much happened before.

When I read that our own manager Paul Sturrock was using Charlton Athletic as a yardstick of a club Southampton should try and emulate in terms of what they have achieved, I was surprised.

With all due respect to the young reporters who were interviewing Paul, they probably wouldn't know that the Saints of 20 years ago would be a better one to try and emulate.

It shouldn't be forgotten that despite much lower gates and lack of Sky money, we finished second in 1984 and were top-six regulars in that period - levels that Charlton Athletic have never been at.

So it would be nice if more of our own history was made more evident.

One of our finest keepers, Peter Shilton, said on TV recently that he was lucky to have won league championships and European Cups at Nottingham Forest and then been a runner-up at Southampton as well as figuring in three cup semi-finals.

His great goalkeeping rival Ray Clemence remembered the challenge of facing Southampton sides who included individuals like Keegan, Channon and Ball.

But at least there's some recognition of that golden period with the news that next year's away strip is the same two-tone blue one used when we were second in league. It was actually worn at Middlesbrough on the day we went top of the league for the first time in the club's history.

It's good that those days will be remembered - if only for commercial reasons.
