FLOOD threatened parts of the Test Valley could gain some relief from a number of significant highway drainage sche-mes announced by the county council.

Shipton Bellinger hit the national headlines during the last flooding event in 2003 when boats were the only means of transport through much of the village.

Properties in the village, which is on the River Bourne, were also flooded two years previously.

Now Hampshire County Council has announced that two schemes are due to start in the autumn of this year.

Work to improve the drainage on the A338 Salisbury Road will cost £30,000 while work in the village High Street will involve the council spending £42,000.

Another stretch of road hard hit by the flooding was the C77 Biddesden Bottom Road at Redenham near Appleshaw.

The county council is proposing to spend £150,000 in this location to ease the problem.

Work here is also expected to begin in the autumn.

Another scheme will help improve drainage in the village of Upton near Hurstbourne Tarrant where the Bourne Rivulet has flooded a number of homes.

The work in Upton is expected to take place between July and September this year at a cost of £60,000.
