MEMBERS of a former Andover sports and social club have donated a £75,000 cheque to Andover War Memorial Hospital.

The hospital was picked as the first choice by the New River Club, which wanted to donate the money it had raised from selling off its assets in 1998.

Formerly the club was a social club for the workforce of Chapel River Press based in Weyhill Road. When the company did not renew the lease the social club dissolved and the building was knocked down.

Peter Curry, chairman of the New River Club said: "It's a local hospital for local people, which is why I am delighted that the money will be benefiting the community."

The money will enable the hospital to buy a range of equipment that will benefit the patients including a blood counter machine, patient examination couches, endoscopy video camera, a dopler machine, Motomed bikes and a Dinamap observation machine.

Mary Critcher, hospital manager said: "I am absolutely overwhelmed. This will make a huge difference to so many people.

"We are all so appreciative.
