SAINTS could be without Claus Lundekvam and James Beattie for tomorrow's Carling Cup quarter-final with Bolton.

The pair limped out of Saturday's 2-1 win at Liverpool with ankle injuries.

Lundekvam, who is an ever present so far this season, went over on his right ankle in the first-half and was carried off. He was still unable to walk to the team-bus unaided after the match and is a major doubt.

Beattie - who has missed just one game in 2003/04, at home to Chelsea, through injury - turned his left ankle late in the match and although he tried to play on, he was replaced by Agustin Delgado.

Firm decisions about the pair's availability will probably be made today.

With Graeme Le Saux struggling with a hamstring problem, manager Gordon Strachan will be left with a selection headache.

Danny Higginbotham could remain at left-back, with summer signing Fitz Hall coming in to make his debut.

Or he could move Higginbotham to centre-back and play Jason Dodd at left-back with Paul Tefler at right-back.

Up front Delgado could get his first start for more than a year - since Monday December 2 at West Ham in fact - as Strachan may not want to play two smaller strikers in Kevin Phillips and Brett Ormerod against a Bolton side fresh from their own superb 2-1 away win - at Chelsea.

Saints physio Jim Joyce said: "At this stage it looks as if James is less serious than Claus. He was able to jog but could not push off on it, so we had to get him off."
