Sir.-Regarding the letter about Pamber Forest, Mr K Phipard-Shears states that no trees have been planted there for more than 30 years. Sadly, he's wrong, as we supplied many saplings that were planted in 1995.
Many oak forests were planted as a crop to build ships and, in time, ships were made of iron and then steel so the oaks were left to grow in peace. This is an historical fact.
We all enjoy walking in the countryside and hate seeing mature trees being needlessly felled. Even fellers only cut down trees that have to be dealt with. I am a qualified feller and worked for the Crown for more than 20 years, but only cut down where absolutely necessary.
Pamber Forest is privately-owned by a farming estate and timber is a crop. We are very lucky to be able to walk in the forest.
