IT'S a Calypso Christmas ahead for Testwood School, Totton, where music staff have just taken delivery of a set of steel drums.

As the rest of us sing about snow and holly, at the secondary school in Testwood Lane the focus is on the music of the sunny Caribbean.

They don't mean to keep their drums to themselves.

As Testwood music teacher Laura Carr explained: "The kit will be used for community activities, not just for school pupils.

"This will be the New Forest Steel Pan Centre, to match similar centres in Portchester and Basingstoke.

"We are all on a learning curve with the steel drums. Tutors from Hampshire Music service are teaching me as well, but you learn to play the steel drums mostly by listening and picking up the rhythm. It's great fun."
