TOP two Horndean and VT FC both crashed to defeat on Saturday.

Leaders Horndean tripped up 2-1 at East Cowes Vics and Vospers lost by the same margin in their home game against Andover New Street, who make a habit of tethering the top dogs.

"VT might think they are in a league above everyone else," said New Street co boss Graham Knight, "but we've proved differently. This is the second time we've beaten them this season."

Disappointed VT boss Dave Diaper said: "If you had been watching the game, you would have thought the teams were from the lower end of the division.

"We beat them 5-1 at their place earlier in the season and, after we took the lead on Saturday, I think a few players thought it was going to be another formality. But it wasn't, and hopefully it will act as a kick up the backside. But it was a poor game. They didn't win it, we lost it."

New Street, though, will beg to differ. After Dean Byrne had given VT a first-half lead, Nick Turpin then Tim Kidney, with a far post header from a Kev Knight corner, swung it New Street's way.

East Cowes Vics came from a goal behind to subject Horndean to their first league defeat for more than ten games. Darren Plenty equalised just before half-time with a scissors kick and sub Mark Mitchell scored with his second touch from Plenty's cross.

But minutes after scoring Mitchell, who had been suffering from flu, felt sick and had to go off again.

Hythe and Dibden grabbed a rare win at Locks Heath thanks to second-half penalty from Ian Harvey after Roger Maynard had had his heel clipped. It left a gash on Maynard's Achilles and he took no further part in the game.

It was a great day for Hampshire League newcomers Mottisfont who went to the top of second division after an impressive 4-0 home win over Ludgershall.

Last season Mottisfont finished third in the Southampton Senior League. Now they are the only side in the county league left with an unbeaten record after hat-trick hero Al Bundy and Alan Smith steered them home against a Ludgershall side who harbour title aspirations themselves after a bright start.

"It's an historic day for Mottisfont," beamed club stalwart Ralph Collins. "It's the first time we've ever been top of county league."

They skipped up the table past Netley who were involved in the Hampshire Intermediate Cup.

David Coleman FC were scraping along at the lower end of Division 2 for the first three months of the season. Now they are climbing fast after losing just one of their last eight games.

The Salisbury side gained a thrilling last-minute victory over East Lodge at Victoria Park where it finished up 4-3 for DC after they had allowed their Pompey opponents to come back from two down to 3-3. Matt Hinds (2), Steve Moore and Dave Westwell got the DC goals.
