Newport IoW manager Steve Tate has had a gutful of watching gilt-edged chances squandered by his misfiring team.

Danny Hatcher was the latest culprit, missing an open goal in Saturday's 2-1 defeat at fast-rising Banbury.

Tate, pictured below, fumed: "Glenn Howes missed one in the FA Cup against Harrow Borough and Adam Barsdell missed one at Eastleigh last week. I'm not just talking chances, I'm talking glaring open goals. It's not acceptable that we're missing chance after chance."

The exception to that rule is new signing Stuart Cannie, who headed the Islanders in front on the stroke of half-time ten minutes after ex-Orient man Hatcher had horribly miscued from five yards.

George Redknapp lobbed Banbury back on terms on 56 minutes and Newport's Glenn Howes was dismissed for a second cautionable offence before Chris Potter struck for the Oxfordshire side with six minutes remaining.

Tate reflected: "Stuart was the one plus point in front of goal. He's come up from a lower standard with Wimborne and he doesn't let it bother him if he misses. I wish a few more of our lads would take note."

Fleet Town are confident of beating Gosport Borough in the race to sign teenage Havant & Waterlooville striker Craig Leworthy.

Manager Mick Catlin said: "It's all agreed that Craig is coming to us and it's just a question now of thrashing out a fee and agreeing personal terms with the player."

Having finished his month's loan spell at Fleet, Leworthy couldn't play in Saturday's 5-2 home defeat by championship contenders Histon.

Amazingly the lowly Hampshire side twice took the lead through Shea Saunders and Steve Whitcher but were pegged back by two goals apiece from Ian Cambridge and Neil Kennedy before Saunders missed a penalty following a foul on Whitcher.

The visitors scored again through Jamie Barker in the 66th minute and Catlin acknowledged: "Histon and Salisbury are the best footballing sides we've played this season.

"Histon are better than league leaders Tonbridge who we played last week, although they're not that clever at the back."
