HUNDREDS of electric blankets failed tests carried out by safety watchdogs in Hampshire. More than half of 850 blankets checked across the county proved hazardous. It was in contrast to the previous year when 37 per cent of those looked at were found to be faulty.
Many checked earlier this year were old and worn out, had poor wiring, broken controls or no protection against over-heating.
A similar investigation in Southampton found around 50 of the 114 blankets tested failed the safety checks and carried a potential electrical or fire risk. Councillor Ken Thornber, leader of Hampshire County Council, said: "These results show how important it is to have electric blankets checked regularly. As blankets age they are more likely to develop faults. It is recommended that they are checked at least every three years.
"Trading standards has been carrying out these checks for six years and on average 49 per cent of blankets fail the tests. Everyone should make sure their blanket is safe before they plug it in."
