A CITY school smashed all records when it raised thousands of pounds for charity to celebrate its 450th anniversary.

The independent King Edward VI School, in Hill Lane, Southampton, broke all previous fundraising records when it raised more than £20,000 for local and international charities.

The money was raised during the year by a team of pupils using a variety of methods - doughnut selling, a fancy dress day, a Pop Idol style Kesidol competition, sponsored leg-waxing, a James Bond theme disco, the 450th anniversary grand draw, a rock concert called KESTOCK. Almost £15,000 of the money enabled 12 students to take part in an annual visit to Onesti in Romania to work with orphans.

Projects including St Dismas for the Homeless, Oakhaven Hospice in Lymington, the Southampton Toy Appeal, Naomi House, Leukaemia Busters, UNICEF and Macmillan Cancer Relief have all benefited from donations.
