Jo Edmondson's dramatic equaliser with 90 seconds of normal time left earned Southampton a creditable 2-2 draw with South Womens League high fliers Wimbledon.

It kept the city club on the shirt-tails of the unbeaten leaders.

The Southampton girls were to be treated to a free slap-up meal by team sponsors Adams-Morey had they ended the Dons' ten-match unbeaten record. But, in a dramatic finish, they were content with becoming only the second side to glean a point off the SW19 slickers.

Wimbledon had the better of the 50-50 contests and nudged ahead from a penalty corner ten minutes before the break.

But, within five minutes of the restart, Southampton were on level terms - Edmondson deflecting home Sue Crowley's short corner.

Wimbledon promptly responded with a penalty corner conversion of their own but, after a spell of few chances, Southampton upped the tempo and grabbed the crucial equaliser.

Jo Knight made a lateral run across the D before slipping a pass to Edmondson, whose reverse stick shot sizzled past a startled Dons 'keeper.

Nadine Devereux struck twice to earn Trojans a 2-2 draw with Loughborough Students, who are three points ahead at the top of EHA Division 1.

But skipper Ali Wakefield maintained: "We should have won. We had the chances to."

Devereux fired Trojans into a 26th-minute lead and then had to rescue a point midway through the second period after Carolyn Steele and Clare Gavin had given Loughborough the advantage.

Southampton's Anna Skelton made her national league debut for the university.

Izzy Cochrane's late winner gave Trojans II a 3-2 win over Havant and kept the newly-promoted Stoneham club within two points of Aldershot & Farnham, who weathered a late Southampton comeback at the rain drenched Sports Centre.

Kathy James and Monita Suter got the other Trojans goals, while Janette Jones bagged both goals for Southampton, who almost clawed back a three-goal deficit but were beaten 3-2.

Amos Collins and 13-year old starlet 'Whipper' Thorne swept Winchester to a 2-0 win over bottom club New Milton.

Fareham flexed their muscles for Saturday's title crunch at leaders Petersfield with a 2-0 win over Gregarians (Oldham, Hoare), while Hunter, Havers, Ellis, and Reece were on target in Southampton's creditable 4-1 win over Havant.
