CAMPAIGNING residents have warned it's only a matter of time before a speeding vehicle kills a child or pensioner on a busy Stubbington road.

But borough traffic chiefs are refusing to take any action in Marks Road, Stubbington, despite a 76-name petition and backing from the ward councillor, Jim Forrest.

Mother of four Janet Hawkins says lorry and car drivers pay no attention to a 30mph limit on the road that is home to Crofton Secondary School and Baycroft School.

Many elderly people from Spencer House retirement home, that is also located in the street, are terrified to even cross the road.

Council officers using a radar gun monitored vehicle speeds and advised borough councillors against taking any action as the highest recorded speed was 33mph.

But Mrs Hawkins said: "If you've got a radar gun pointing at you, you are going to slow down whether it's a policeman or not.

"I am disgusted they are not doing anything. We pay our taxes and we are not asking for the world. We just want two road humps.

"It is only a matter of time before there is going to be an injury or even a death and I'm worried it's going to be one of my children."

Fareham Council executive voted against traffic calming measures.

Instead, council officers will speak to the two schools in a bid to implement a green travel plan and cut the number of parents and teachers using cars.

Councillor Forest said: "The green travel plan is the first step. It should reduce the number of vehicles coming down the road. Then we could possibly persuade the council to consider a reduction in the speed limit.

"All the people are looking for is a couple of cushions in the road. It's not hugely expensive. We are talking about a few thousand pounds at the most."
