MORE than 400 local people are already enjoying the benefits of an allotment in Andover, but there are still plenty available for hire from the borough council.

More than 400 of the 498 available plots in Andover are occupied.

The benefits of fresh, home grown produce coupled with healthy outdoor activity are becoming more valued and digging the soil is also recognised as a good stress-busting exercise.

The council operates seven sites in Andover and is keen to fill the vacant plots, in particular at The Drove, Mylen Road and Churchill Way sites where there is a good choice of plots available.

All plots at Vigo Road and Barlows Lane are tenanted, but a few spaces are still vacant at Old Winton Road and Admirals Way.

The average size of a plot is five rods, (approximately 126 square metres).

All plots are rotavated when vacated in preparation for new tenants to take over and water is provided on site.

Plots are currently available for £21.50 per year or just £16.25 for those over 60.

Horticultural officer Jenny Parks said: "Autumn is a good time to take on a plot in preparation for spring.

"We are particularly keen to talk to any community groups or schools who feel they could make good use of an allotment for educational or theraputic purposes."
