YOUNGSTERS were 'chuffed' to receive free modelling kits won at a recent Andover Model Railway Club exhibition.

Test Valley Mayor Pat West presented the winners with their kits after a prize draw was held, rather appropriately, at the Station Hotel.

Children tested their reflexes controlling a model train around a custom-built track before they could enter the draw.

Keith Waltier from Romsey is hoping to take up his railway modelling habit again after winning a 'Flying Scotsman' train set.

Danny Gibbs from Andover won a Scalextric set and twins Naomi and Rhiannon Hirst from Hedge End received a 'Smokey Joe' train set.

Exhibition manager Allan Travell said: "We are extremely grateful to Hornby Hobbies for helping us out and donating the prizes.

"I get frustrated when I see children playing electronic games when railway modelling can teach them more about patience and the use of dexterity than anything else.

"Many children are dragged to the exhibitions by their father reminiscing about his childhood - and that is how many of them seem to get into it these days which is good to see."
