CONTEMPORARY art took on a new twist when Southampton schoolchildren proved junk really can be artistic.
Youngsters from the Shirley area of the city unveiled a unique sculpture made entirely from recycled materials as part of a programme to promote sustainability among the young people.
The sculpture is just one element of a larger £56,000 environmental programme in Outer Shirley.
The children, all aged under 16 and members of the Youth Action Group, unveiled their sculpture at Redbridge Community School, in Cuckmere Lane, yesterday.
Organiser Ashley Phillips from the environment Centre, said: "We decided to get young people involved in the project to promote recycling among this age group.
"We hope that the eye-catching sculptures will become a focal point to engage the community in recycling and sustainability issues. All the members of group have worked extremely hard."
