AN MP took political spin to new heights as he polished up his circus skills in Ringwood town centre.

Christchurch MP Chris Chope joined a host of professional circus artists who were clowning around in the Furlong to raise buckets of cash for this year's Children in Need appeal.

Obviously used to performing in the political arena, the MP proved a natural at plate spinning and didn't bat an eyelid as a couple of jesters juggled heavy clubs past his ears.

Chope was standing in for fellow Conservative New Forest West MP Desmond Swayne, who is currently serving as an officer with the Territorial Army in the Gulf.

Other performers also delighted crowds with their circus antics, while collectors filled their buckets with donations from passers-by.

Organiser Belinda Charlton hoped the two days of circus shows would raise thousands for Children in Need. She said: "We've had a lot of support. People have been joining in all day long and have been very enthusiastic."

Hundreds of locals took their chance to have a go at juggling, unicycling and other circus acts.

Local traders also got into the swing of the annual event, organising games and competitions in their shops.

Ringwood mayor Cllr Michael Thierry thanked the organisers: "It's marvellous that the town is able to put on this sort of show. We are fortunate to have the Furlong Centre."
