ELDERLY residents in Basingstoke have celebrated the opening of six new one-bedroom flats.

The flats were handed over to Kingfisher Housing Association last month following refurbishment work on unused warden accommodation. As well as the flats, work has been carried out to refurbish the communal lounge at Townsend Court, Townsend Close.

At a ceremony to mark the handover, 75-year-old resident Mary Bartle said: "We are really pleased with our newly-refurbished lounge and dining room.

"It is nice and cheerful now and hopefully we'll get more residents coming to our darts evenings, coffee mornings and Saturday night events. We always have a good laugh and it keeps our brains working."

Stuart Edlington, Kingfisher's operations director, said: "With our move to a mobile warden service, we no longer needed on-site accommodation for our sheltered scheme staff and are delighted to provide six additional flats for the elderly."
