THE countdown to Christmas starts with a flourish on Dec-ember 5 when the Winchester Festival celebrates the seasonal traditions which have developed over half a millennium.

Five Centuries of Christmas is a show devised and presented by John Julius Norwich and Sally Bradshaw, accompanied by David Harper at the piano.

The often hilarious programme draws on a wide variety of music and readings, recreating the spirit of Christmas in all its richness from medieval Coventry to 19th century Music Hall, 18th century Dorset to Dickensian London, Dylan Thomas to Alan Bennett.

The show has previously entranced audiences around the world and new material has been added for its single performance at the Theatre Royal in Winchester.

Winchester Festival artistic director, John Miller, said: "It's four years since John Julius Norwich brought us his Christmas Crackers evening, which was such a resounding success.

"I'm delighted that this new collaboration with the distinguished singer and actress Sally Bradshaw will be our special Christmas fundraiser.

"Seats are already selling well and I can think of no better, or jollier, way to begin the festive season."

Tickets, priced £20 and £17.50, are available from Music at Winchester on 01962 877977 or from the Theatre Royal on 01962 840440.
