STUDENTS at Eastleigh College were today celebrating a £200,000 Whitehall windfall.

The grant, awarded because of the school's status as a Centre of Vocational Excellence, will be used to give plumbing and electrical installation facilities a makeover.

Pupils aged between 16 and 40 travel to the centre from miles around to receive training from tutors who regularly take industry sabbaticals to ensure their teaching stays relevant.

Since the college successfully applied for CoVE status, the number of students they are teaching has almost doubled from 170 to 320.

Chief executive Tony Lau Walker said: "We are providing much-needed training to address skills shortages in the region."
