Eastleigh'S YOUNG citizens are again to be saluted for their contribution to the community.

The "Young People of the Year Award" is organised by Eastleigh Council with the backing of the Hampshire Youth Service.

It is specifically aimed at people up to the age of 18 or under who have carried out outstanding acts of community service, shown regular acts of kindness to others or performed outstanding acts of bravery or courage.

Eastleigh's executive councillor for social policy, Anne Winstanley said: "We often read about young people when they are causing trouble but thankfully that is only a small minority. We know there are many young people who made a positive contribution within their community and this is a great way to recognise their efforts."

The council's marketing officer, Steve Collins, added: "The council is committed to involving and working with its communities, and young people are no exception.

"This year's award builds on the success of last year when 12 young people were recognised.

"I would love to encourage anyone who knows a young person who deserves to be nominated to put them forward."

Nomination forms are available from the civic offices, town and parish council offices, Eastleigh Town Centre Office, Eastleigh Community Services and schools and libraries.

The closing date is January 9 and the awards will be presented at a special evening in early spring. Last year was Eastleigh Council's first "Oscars" for young people. Among those who received a special achievement award was 14-year-old Clare Nolan, sister of Hamble schoolboy, the late Dan Nolan.
