An injury-time try from Tottonians' teenage winger Joe Jarvis clinched a thrilling last-gasp victory on Jersey to confirm that the promotion champions from last season are finally finding their feet in London Division 3 South-West.

Jersey, last season's beaten Hampshire Worthington's Cup finalists, are notoriously difficult to beat on their airport-lined ground but the visitors fully deserved their third success of the season.

Playing with the wind and the Rue des Landes ground slope, Totts built up an 11-point advantage by the break with former colt Mike Dibden running in his first try for the senior side and Paul Goodall landing two penalties.

But the side with plenty of experience at this level always felt they were in the contest and it proved that way when, with ten minutes remaining, they drove over for a try which put them ahead - much to the delight of another Island packed house.

It looked like being enough but Jarvis, on as a replacement, scooted over in the corner with the final move of the contest and Goodall added the extras from wide out.

Skipper Miles Northover was thrilled with the win which takes his side up a place to eighth in the league but, with other results in the division going their way, they are just two points shy of Weybridge Vandals in third.

"It was a fantastic win over there," said the proud father of a new-born son last Monday. "We started at 100 per cent and knocked them off their game, but dogged it out throughout the game to ensure we brought the points back."

He was especially pleased that two of the younger players had stepped up with their first tries for the senior team. "It is a sign of the strength the club has that players like Mike and Joe come into the first team and perform superbly, scoring the tries to win this game for us."

Romsey also had plenty to celebrate as they leaped into mid-table - a position that seemed a long way off just a month ago - as they dealt out a 21-12 beating to Old Paulines, recovering from a six-point interval deficit to do so.

It was their third win from their last four league encounters and owed a considerable amount to the hard work of the forwards, who pressured and harried their Surrey opponents.

The brothers Coe - Adam and Simon - levelled the try-scoring tally, with Graham Noble, who is becoming an excellent acquisition for the club at fly-half, adding 11 points from the boot.

Southampton will want to forget the past week. Their expulsion from the Powergen Junior Vase for fielding an unregistered player was confirmed on Thursday, allowing New Milton & District a free return to the competition.

The mood in the club was not brightened at Farnham either. For despite performing admirably, they came out second best 28-6 with Dave Griffiths posting a penalty and a drop goal for the Test Park club.

He thought the scoreline flattered the Surrey borderers but added: "The forwards competed well, but the difference was turning pressure into points."

And there is trouble afoot at Petersfield as they slumped to a dismal home defeat to a well-organised KCS Old Boys side 41-6, conceding six tries and barely threatening to mark their own card with a similar score.
