AFTER more than 55 years' wait, the Southampton branch of the Far East Prisoners of War Association has finally been given a permanent memorial.
Members of the group attended a special ceremony at Bitterne Church for the unveiling of a headstone to remember those people from Southampton who served in the Far East during the Second World War and were held as prisoners of war.
Two former memorials at Red Cross headquarters in South-ampton had to be removed when the Red Cross relocated and sold off its offices.
Association member Ron Killick, 87, of Winchester Road, Shirley, said: "We are really pleased to have this permanent memorial.
"It won't be moved again."
