SIR Bob Geldof is the star attraction at the Eastleigh Summer Music Festival tonight.

Sir Bob, who is as famous for his charity work as his many chart hits, will perform in a circus-style big top in Leigh Road Recreation Ground at 7.30pm.

The singer became famous with the post-punk band Boomtown Rats, who had hits with Rat Trap and I Don't Like Mondays, before launching a successful solo career.

He courted global attention in the mid-80s after devising the Live Aid charity concert in aid of Ethiopian famine victims.

Other performers in the festival include The Drifters and Real Abba Gold on Wednesday, The Levellers and Jools Holland on Thursday, The SAS Band (featuring Leo Sayer and Paul Young) on Friday, The Saw Doctors on Saturday and Rolf Harris on Sunday.

Concerts are taking place both in the big top and at venues around Eastleigh.
