A MAN was fighting for his life today after suffering serious head injuries in an industrial accident at Southampton Docks.

The 30-year-old was rushed to Southampton General Hospital in a critical condition following an incident at the Midland Glass recycling firm at the ABP site on Tuesday afternoon.

Emergency services raced to the scene at about 2.30pm after a duct was reported to have plummeted on to a group of maintenance workers, hitting one man and causing him to fall.

Det Sgt Mark Good of Shirley CID said from initial investigations it appeared that the man had fallen from scaffolding, suffering serious head injuries as he crashed to the floor.

The casualty was taken to Southampton General Hospital by ambulance, where his injuries were described as life-threatening.

Last night, detectives said he remained in a critical but stable condition in the hospital's intensive care unit.

Police said the man was believed to have worked in the Southampton area for some time but was a foreign national.

Today, a joint investigation by the Health and Safety Executive and Hampshire police was continuing at the scene.

Detectives from Shirley CID were visiting the premises yesterday in a bid to gain a clearer picture of how the accident happened.
