HAMPSHIRE bid to break a near two-year jinx at Scarborough tomorrow.

The county have not won a championship match away from the Rose Bowl since triumphing at the Riverside against Durham in August 2001.

That was when Alex Morris took nine wickets in the match and scored 52 batting at No 9 as Hampshire won by seven wickets.

The last time Hampshire won back-to-back championship matches was also during their 2001 promotion campaign when they beat Derbyshire and Durham in June and July at the Rose Bowl.

Now manager Paul Terry is hoping fortune continues to favour Hampshire after their luck turned on the final two days of the sensational championship win against Glamorgan.

"We'd had a couple of big things happen (against Glamorgan) with Nic Pothas injured and Richard Hindley breaking a couple of bones in his hand," he said.

"But the wicket was as good to bowl on as it had been all game and we took advantage.

"One or two climbed nicely and one or two kept low in the first couple of overs and that always puts the fear of God into sides, particularly when they're sitting right behind it all on their balcony."

Terry added: "We've done a lot of good things that haven't gone our way but against Glamorgan we got a couple of lbws, edges carried and we caught most of them.

"It was a bit special, but it will mean nothing if we don't build on it."

Chris Tremlett keeps his place at Scarborough after claiming 6-51 in Glamorgan's second innings and a match analysis of 9-123 on his return to championship action after a foot injury.

James Bruce's 3-42 last Friday was also a career best.

"Chris may not have played against Glamorgan, we wanted to ease him back in, but a couple of injuries and Wasim's departure meant we had little choce and he did fantastically well," Terry remarked.

"That's good for his confidence and it's also great to see James Bruce coming through and performing very well."

With Pothas injured, Iain Brunnschweiler is expected to be handed his championship debut behind the stumps tomorrow.

As revealed in yesterday's Daily Echo, off-spinner Shaun Udal has declared himself fit after a shoulder injury forced Hampshire to call up Hindley just 45 minutes before the start of the Glamorgan match.

Robin Smith, who has missed a fortnight with a hamstring strain, is expected to reclaim his place at Scarborough while Alan Mullally could also be included.

Hampshire are still some way from signing a replacement for Wasim Akram

Terry said: "It's still a priority. We require an overseas player for the one-dayers more than anything but we're waiting for people to get back to us."
