WATERSPORTS enthusiasts and villagers today spoke of their shock after a gang staged a car- jacking at gunpoint in Stubbing-ton, stealing a £10,000 jet ski.

As reported in later editions of yesterday's Daily Echo, a 37-year-old man was forced out of his car after he was flagged down by a motorcyclist and then threatened by another man brandishing a handgun. It is believed a second motorcylist was also involved.

The gang then stole his car and the trailer carrying the £10,000 jet ski. The car was later found abandoned and forensic officers spent yesterday examining it for clues.

Officers believe the victim was followed from Lee-on-the-Solent where he had spent Sunday jet skiing. Fareham CID is now warning people using high-powered skis and boats to be on their guard.

Det Con Keith Huelin said: "It was obviously a well planned operation and it is possible the gang had been watching the jet skiers at Lee-on-the-Solent.

"Thankfully car-jackings in the area are rare, particularly ones involving guns."

Watersports enthusiasts enjoying the sun at Lee yesterday spoke of their shock at the attack that happened at 7.30pm on Titchfield Road.

Gary Slaughter, 40, from Basingstoke said: "I am absolutely stunned, I have never heard of anything like this before. Particularly using guns, I mean they would never sell it for what it is worth."

Andy Hales, 38, from London, who uses the beach head at Lee regularly, said: "I have heard of people tampering cars with trailers on the back so they are forced to pull over, but I have never heard of an attack involving guns, it is shocking really."

The violence of the attack has also dismayed locals including Linda Edmonds who works at Hollam Nurseries on Titchfield Road where the car jacking took place.

"I am just appalled really that this sort of attack involving guns happened here. It is very shocking."

The motorist was today back in his London home recovering from the ordeal at gunpoint. He will be offered help from Victim Support to help him deal with the attack.

Esther Freeman from VS said it was possible the full affects of the attack wouldn't be felt by the victim for months.

"Sometimes it is instant, sometimes it can take time. For an attack of this violence the victim could suffer in many different ways, quite possible not being able to go back to where this happened or even get in a car. The impact of something like this is very personal and each individual can cope with it differently."

Meanwhile police are still appealing for witnesses who saw anything suspicious around the Daedalus slipway where the jet skis launch from, or the car jacking itself, or the dumping of a white Sierra at a Long Lane in Bursledon at some point between 7.30pm and 10pm when it was discovered.
