WINCHESTER students enjoyed a sleepless night - but it was all in the name of research.
About 75 psychology students at Peter Symonds College spent the night awake as part of an experiment.
They went without sleep for 36 hours two normal days with 12 hours spent in the college sports centre.
The experiment was organised by the head of psychology Dr Geoff Rolls and his team of tutors, Alex Banks, Chrissie Rycroft, Andy Pond, Britto Tarrant and James Larcombe.
It was designed to show something that many young people deny that sleep really does matter.
The night's programme was varied and involved team-building activities such as three-legged races, egg and spoon, dress the mummy as well as serious data collection and study.
A barbecue in the college grounds kicked off the evening's activities and snacks and drinks were available throughout the night.
Sarah Szmytki, who reached her 17th birthday as midnight struck, enjoyed a surprise birthday cake.
She said: "I had a fabulous birthday even though it was in unusual circumstances. I won the musical chairs race too so that made me feel really good."
