GLORIOUS Goodwood put giants in the shade yesterday with a global accolade for the star-studded tenth anniversary Festival of Speed.

Ford and Vauxhall were celebrating their centenaries big time on the heraldic south coast estate over the weekend, which saw record crowds put at 150,000.

McLaren Grand Prix driver David Coulthard said: "It shows we are all passionate about motor sport."

World champions by the dozen put machines worth millions apiece to their limits in a dramatic three days of action with a few spills - yet no casualties.

American legends Dan Gurney, Jim Hall and first US Formula One world champion Phil Hill all enthused about the event.

Hill said: "I can't get over the world standard set by the House of March in just ten years."

Subsequent world champion Alan Jones, another regular competitor for several years, said: "It's worth coming from Australia every year - it's the best motor racing event in the world."

Fastest time of the day on the 1.16-mile course was 42.95 seconds set by Graeme Wight junior who crossed the finish of the hill climb at 143mph.
