A FORMULA 1 racing car was literally left standing by pedal-powered cars on the streets of Ringwood yesterday.

While the static Minardi of F1 ace Jos Verstappen gleamed in the sunshine, teams of intrepid pedal-pushers contesting the Ringwood Pedal Car Grand Prix sweltered in the blistering heat for two hours.

Local hopes were pinned on the Spirit of Verwood car, winner of the last three pedal car grand prix and carrying the coveted number 1 plate.

But as the cars lined up on the grid after a parade lap the starting grid was claimed by the glamour girls of Arnewood School's all-girl team.

And after carnival queen Katy Butler and BBC presenter Roger Finn flagged off the grid of nearly 30 cars, the early running was made by eventual winners the silver dream racer entry RHH Franks, which set a ferocious pace to complete 68 laps around the street circuit, lined by thousands of cheering spectators. At the finish only runner up Spirit of Verwood was on the same lap as the leaders with third-placed Great Central Racing from Bristol just behind.
