We seem to have featured several top guitarists from the whole spectrum of genres over recent weeks. This week's six string talent hails from Scotland and the jazz world - nice!

Martin Taylor began playing guitar at the age of four. The small acoustic model was a present from his father - jazz bassist Buck Taylor.

Martin first came to prominence in the late 70s through his collaborations with violin legend Stephane Grappeli. His solo albums have received rave reviews and he has received numerous accolades from his contemporaries. Fellow jazz musician Chet Atkins, called him 'one of the greatest and most impressive guitarists in the world today'.

Inspired by gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt, he has developed his own style of solo playing and last year became the first jazz guitarist to be honoured by the Queen, when he received his MBE. He has been likened to George Benson and Pat Metheny. The latter calling him 'inspiring and amazing'. To prove the point he has carried off the Best Guitarist prize in the British Jazz awards seven years in succession.

Those unfamiliar with his name may know his work from his version of Robert Palmer's tune Johnny and Mary used in the Renault Clio advertisements featuring Nicole and Papa.

17 July, Theatre Royal, Winchester. Performance: 8pm. Tickets: £10-£14 Box office: 01962 840440.
