ALL her life she has valued the pleasure of reading.
Now 76-year-old Doreen Hay-ward of Swaythling in South-ampton is passing on her enjoyment to the next gen-eration.
Twice a week she helps four youngsters improve their reading skills at Swaythling
Primary School in one-to-one sessions.
The retired infant school teacher has been a volunteer reader helper for the last three years.
"One seven-year-old came to me and said he hated reading," said the grandmother of eight.
"All he wanted to do was watch television. He told me he liked eagles so I found a book about birds of prey.
"As soon as he saw the pictures on the cover he couldn't wait to have a good look at it."
Now the Hampshire branch of Volunteer Reading Help is urging more people to follow in the footsteps of Mrs Hayward.
If you have a couple of hours to spare each week and can give your time regularly for at least two terms call Kirsty Rogers at Volunteer Reading Help on 023 8065 3237.
All volunteers must undergo police checks.
