STAFF and pupils at Westgate School in Winchester are limbering up for Race for Life in Southampton on Sunday, July 20.

Louise Fitzgerald, a communicator for deaf pupils at the school, explained that 11 staff and four girls will be taking part.

"Half of us are running and half of us are walking.

"We haven't done too much training but we are really looking forward to taking part," she said.

The Westgate team is just one of many taking part in the 5km event on Southampton Common.

Teams from across the city and further afield will be putting on their trainers for the day.

Organisers are hoping 10,000 women will take part in the Southampton event that helps to pay for cancer research. It's the tenth anniversary of Race for Life and there will be a special party atmosphere on Southampton Common with live bands, street entertainers and free massage sessions for the runners.

Across the country 130 races have taken place this summer and they are expected to raise a whopping £17.5m for cancer research.

Some of those taking part have overcome cancer to get back to fitness and many of the others will be running in memory of loved ones lost to the cruel disease.

The closing date for entries is July 13.
