European Union Chamber Orchestra and Tasmin Little, Winchester Cathedral
The Winchester Festival continues to present beautiful music in a beautiful setting.
In the nave of the 900-year-old cathedral, the modern musicians of the EU Chamber Orchestra played with accomplished professionalism.
John Ireland's Downland Suite produced some deeply expressive moments, particularly in the second Elegy movement.
Lalanath de Silva's Tablesque, based on South Asian tabla rhythms, included some dramatic staccato touches within a Western classical framework.
Mozart's Violin Concerto K.218 in D featured Tasmin Little, displaying a dazzling violin technique and playing with passion, rapport and a clear enjoyment of her fellow-musicians and the ancient setting.
The concert's climax of Haydn's Symphony No 42 in D major delighted the audience with some fluent and sweeping details in the Andantino, vivid harmonies between the brass and strings in the Allegretto, and technically demanding but flawlessly delivered melody lines in the final Scherzando.
An uplifting musical treat!
