GOLF: Success comes the way of members of both Winchester clubs

PAUL NEILSON had a day to remember when he won South Winchester's Easter Cup competition.

The 34-year-old who plays off scratch, landed an incredible hole-in-one at the 394-yard par four 5th hole and is now waiting to have it confirmed as the UK's longest-ever single shot for a hole.

The Royal and Ancient handbook confirms the previous longest as 393 yards, way back in 1980.

Says Paul: It's a downhill run to the green and my biggest fear was that I'd hit it a little too well!

"I thought I may have overshot the green and upset the group in front. "But it was great thrill to find the ball down the hole - even though it did cost me a fortune later in the bar!"

Paul, who lives in Southampton, has been a member at South Winchester for eight years and it's his first 'albatross'.

He went on to complete a fine round of 65, which would have beaten the course record by one stroke had not winter rules applied.

"I suppose it wasn't a bad way to start the season!" he joked.
