Billy Mackenzie surpassed even his own expectations when he grabbed the overall 125cc honours in the third round of the British Motocross Championships at Lyng near Norwich.

After dislocating his collar bone and breaking his nose in a crash in round two of the British series earlier in the month, Mackenzie admitted: "I expected to be out of action for six weeks.

"I tried to ride in Holland the week after but crashed twice and hurst my shoulder again. It's just been a matter of biting the bullet and getting on with it."

Two second places at Lyng, behind new Championship leader Tom Church and defending champion Stephen Sword lifted the young Scot back up to fifth place in the points standing.

To cap a good day, the Tichfield-based teenager powered the Dixon Yamaha to the highest finish by a 125cc machine in the Maxxis Cup race.

Steve Dixon's Yamaha team, who operate out of the Meon Valley, had two other top ten finishers in Mark Jones who was eighth in the first of the 250 races and Jason Higgs who was eighth and tenth.

Jason Dougan kept the home fires burning in the big MR Thumpercross event at Owslebury, sponsored by Martin's Rubber Company from Southampton.

The Portsmouth teenager was an emphatic winner of the 250cc class with three start-to-finish victories at the impressively revamped Winchester MCC track.

Jonathon Pettitt provided another clean sweep in the Expert Class while Nigel Parker, Mark Fisher, Adam Smith, Jack Ithell and Matthew Beckley picked up wins in the Junior classes.
