OAKLEY A have won their way back to division two of the Basingstoke and District Table Tennis League after a season's break.

They will go up as division three champions after a 10-0 win over Coaching Lions. But it was not all easy going as Sue Tompsett took Charles Smith to five sets before going down 13-11 after fighting back from two sets down.

Then Oakley had Sarah Whithorn to thank as she powered to a great treble in a 7-3 win over KG E. Whithorn sealed her maximum after a five-set victory over Dave Partridge in a match that lasted 40 minutes. Partridge finished his night with a good win over Chaz Smith. Chris Smith chipped in with a win over Mike Wood in the last match of the evening.

Queens C enjoyed a 9-1 victory over Labour A. George Hellans and Roy Pike led the way but Mike Chamberlain found Barry Barnes in top form, losing 11-8 in the fifth after being 2-1 ahead after three sets.

Roy Pike then hit his sixth maximum in a row in a 7-3 win over AWE to virtually confirm Queens as runners-up. Pike beat John McLarty 11-9 in the fifth set while Hellans picked up two wins but Chamberlain fell to McLarty and Paul Rampton.

KG E's Dave Partridge was a five-sets winner over Brian Gridley while team-mates Mike Wood and Phil Ware each beat Dave White to help the team to a 6-4 win over Oakley B. White started the evening off with a four-sets win over Partridge.

St Peters A moved to the top of division one and, with just two games to play, are 10 points clear. But they still have to play the two teams breathing down their neck.

Steve Murgatroyd's three wins ensured a 7-3 triumph over Cannons, with James Wright adding two wins - over Ron Powell 11-8 in the fifth set and Terry White. White won in four sets over Richard Mole, adding to a good brace from Mike Rebbeck.

Pete Matthew and Sean Pickin then joined Murgatroyd to whitewash a two-man Hannington side 10-0.

Malcolm Cummins of Winklebury enjoyed a stunning maximum against a strong Queens A side. Cummins sealed his treble with a 9-11, 11-9, 8-11, 14-12, 11-9 win over Tony Duffield.

Cummins also defeated Basingstoke's new senior champion Tony Palaczky in straight sets to help Winklebury to a 5-5 draw. Colin Wilkes and Pete Bradley added to Winklebury's score with wins over Alan Palaczky.

Winklebury showed that they are a major force in division one by blitzing KG A for the second time this season. The 10-0 win was achieved by Cummins, Wilkes and John Golding with only one match going beyond three sets. This left KG struggling at the foot of the table with their rivals RAF still to play.

Hannington's Tony Brown was a thorn in Centerprise International's side as he took the scalps of Kevin Macken, 11-8 in the fifth set, and Dave Salisbury to pick up two points.

But Brown could not dent Tony Reynolds' 100 per cent record on the night. Salisbury fought well to defeat John Ahlan 11-6 in the fifth set.

Cannons also pinched two points off title chasers Centerprise with Paul Rattue and Mike Rebbeck defeating John Goodyer. Macken sealed his treble with an 11-9 win in the fifth set over Rebbeck whereas Tony Reynolds was untroubled on the evening.

Brown was again in inspired form as he beat Basingstoke senior runner-up Rattue 11-9 in the fifth set to help his two-man Hannington side to a 5-5 draw with Cannons. Steve Rollason, the Andover senior champion, defeated Terry White and Ron Powell.

In division two, Ashford Hill are looking favourites for runners-up spot, with just two games to play, despite losing 8-2 to the champions-elect Queens B.

Malcolm Record did his best for the team, beating both Richard Cooper and Terry West, but George White showed he is division one class with an untroubled unbeaten display.

St Peters B blew any chances of second place after a 7-3 loss to lowly Hannington B. Llew Hughes, in his first game of the season, started with the scalp of Richard Faulkner, winning 11-5 in the fifth set, but after Alan Lipscombe's win over Avril Waters there was little joy for St Peters.

Steve Ricks and Avril Waters gained points with wins over Tom Speed.

Labour A took eight points off KG C. Keith Dickenson rolled in with his normal three wins, supported by team-mates Colin Chapman and Paul Robinson with two each. Ian Sibbeck and Duncan Sibbeck denied Robinson and Chapman respectively their maximums.

KG D's Brian Edwards shocked Queens B by beating Nigel Cooper in straight sets but then Queens kicked into action, taking the next nine games but Edwards scared George White in a five-setter.
