Winchester City received the Hampshire League championship trophy after beating Vosper 3-0 at Abbots Barton yesterday.

Two goals from ace marksman Andy Forbes helped Wessex League-bound City open up a 14-point advantage over second-placed Vosper.

Danny Smith also netted in front of a crowd of 402 which Winchester believe could be a Hampshire League record attendance.

"It wasn't a great game," said City director of football David Malone.

"They were quite physical and competitive but the best team won. We must have had 75 per cent of the possession."

City led 1-0 at the interval through a goal from Forbes.

Smith doubled the advantage before Forbes completed the scoring with 20 minutes remaininf.

Andover New Street slipped to a 4-1 defeat at Portsmouth Roval Navy with Nic Turpin replying.

New Street, with only pride to play for, took the opportunity to give a number of reserve team players a run out with a view to next season's Premier Division campaign.

Colden Common suffered a 2-1 home reverse to First Division leaders Hayling United. Two defensive errors from the hosts allowed United to take a 2-0 lead at the break and they got men behind the ball and protected their advantage in the second half. Joe Hodge halved the deficit for Common on 70 minutes, but Hayling stood firm to comfortably take the points. Ian Steele, the Colden Common club spokesman, said: "Hayling were committed and the defensive errors cost us, but I couldn't fault our attitude or work-rate."

Second-placed Verwood Town kept the pressure on Hayling by hitting five past Micheldever to ensure that the title race goes to the wire.

Brian Wanklin, with a hat-trick, Ben Giles and an own goal secured a 5-3 victory that impressed club chairman Michael Fry. "Brian put his goals away well," he said.
