Gosport Borough's giant goalkeeper Mark Brown sentenced Winchester City to only their fourth defeat of the season in last night's Russell Cotes Cup semi-final at Privett Park.

But it needed a penalty shoot-out to finally dispose of Neil Hards' Hampshire League leaders as Borough reaped sweet revenge for their Hampshire Senior Cup exit against City, which also ran into extra-time.

A close-fought tie finished 1-1 with Winchester opening the scoring in the 36th minute. Matthew Bicknell mishit a left-foot shot across the face of goal, but the predatory Andy Forbes was there to turn it home.

Four minutes later, Mick Marsh's Jewson Wessex League outfit were level when Mark Peach provided the finish after a strong run by Karl Lis.

Peach hit a header against the woodwork as Gosport upped the tempo in the second half, but with the end of normal time approaching City could have won it but for sharp reactions of Brown.

Ian Mancey whipped in a cross from the right and Forbes's header was tipped onto the bar by the 6ft 5in keeper.

Brown was again the hero in the penalty shoot-out. Despite his height, he somehow got down low to his right to smother Danny Smith's opening spot-kick for Winchester and he saved again from Mancey to send Gosport through 4-2.

City's only previous defeats this season had been against Bashley (Hampshire Senior Cup), Oadby Town (FA Vase) and Amesbury (Hampshire League).

Fleet Town await Borough in the final thanks to the sharp-shooting Saints Academy marksman Shea Saunders.

The 18-year-old, who blotted his copybook with an unsavoury sending-off last week, fired a hat-trick as Andover were despatched 3-2 by the fast-improving Dr Martens Eastern Division side.

Saunders struck twice in quick succession in the 15th and 18th minutes, but back came the Wessex League visitors through Justin Bennett and Vince Rusher to make it 2-2 at half-time - both goals resulting from poor clearances by Fleet keeper Carl Clayton.

Saunders' sweet chip put Fleet back in the driving seat on 76 minutes and Clayton redeemed himself by tipping a potential Rusher equaliser onto the bar.

It ensures a second cup final appearance for Fleet, who already have a date with Ashford Town (Middlesex) next Tuesday in the Aldershot Senior Cup.

Their under-18s showed them the way last night by beating Crookham Krakatoa 3-1 in the Aldershot Junior Cup final at the Recreation Ground.
