BBC commentating legend John Motson was just one of an "overwhelming" entry for the second Lymington RNLI 10k event at the weekend.

'Motty' found time in his hectic diary to compete in the race, which was held in perfect conditions.

Organisers were stunned at the turnout for the event. In 2002 118 runners entered but on Sunday there were 410.

The first man home was RNLI runner Andy Kellaway in a time of 34.27 - two minutes faster than the previous year's winner, Zippy Grice.

Judy Brown, who travelled down from St Albans to compete, won the women's race in 40.16, also a course record.

Organiser James Brookes said: "It was an absolutely superb day. We were overwhelmed by the turnout and we had great feedback from everybody." Motson said: "The course was flat and fast with varied terrain, and the views across the Solent were spectacular."

Motson presented the winners with their trophies before joining RNLI officials for a reception in Lymington.

The event raised over £3,500 for Lymington RNLI in 2002 and Brooks estimates that figure could be more than doubled this year once all the sponsorship comes in.

"The whole event has been a great success," added Brookes.

Due to the unexpected high turnout, officials have apologised for the delay in publishing a full list of race results.

The Echo had been promised a list to print today but instead all competitors will be posted the results.

They should arrive in about a fortnight's time.
