Fixed roadside cameras - six in Hampshire, seven in Portsmouth, three in Southampton and three on the Isle of Wight - go live on Monday.

Called safety cameras, they are all located at notorious accident blackspots.

For that reason, too, the police want people to know exactly where they are - you can even get a "camera locator" leaflet from police stations, council offices and through a dedicated website - www.safetycamera.org.uk

"Our policy is to make our cameras highly visible because we believe that people need to be aware that people have been killed or seriously hurt at these locations," said Dr Marion Sinclair, manager of the partnership behind their introduction.

"We want each motorist to recognise that their driving, and their speed, can be a matter of life or death."

The cameras will pay for themselves through an arrangement with the courts to use speeding fines to meet running costs.

The roadside units will supplement the mobile cameras already used by police on 25 routes in Hampshire and the seven presently installed at traffic lights. The launch of the cameras is being supported by a TV, bus and newspaper advertising campaign.

The six Hampshire camera locations are: the B3037 at Bishopstoke; the A337 Lymington to Lyndhurst road at Setley; the A325 at Holt Pound, near Farnham; Highlands Road, Fareham; the A35 Totton Causeway and the A32 Gosport Road, Fareham.
