Overton United 5 QK Southampton 1

Overton were promoted to Hampshire division one last Saturday, but must get 10 goals against M&T Awbridge in a fortnight's time to secure the title.

United were playing their last home game of the season at the weekend, knowing they could not afford to drop any points if they wanted to win promotion.

Manager Paul Chambers put all five strikers in the squad as Overton went for all-out attacking football and put pressure on the visiting team's defence.

The first goal came from centre-half Gary Savory's free-kick, which gave the keeper no chance as it curled in to the top corner of the net. It was Savory again who got the second from the penalty spot after a handball in the box. United's third came from Leon Dolton as a good move down the right saw him cut inside and score at the near post with a good strike, and the home side went four up after a mix-up in the visitors' defence saw the inspirational Adam Chambers round the keeper to score.

The visitors came out fired up for the second half, and the pattern of the game started to change. However, within 10 minutes of the restart Overton scored their fifth.

A good ball from Adam Chambers to Paul Chambers saw the player-manager put in a burst of speed to get himself past the defender and into the box, where he pulled the ball back for Dolton to score his second and Overton's fifth.

Dolton was replaced by Lee Chambers, and Clive Augustus came on for Andy Wake to see if they could get closer to their target.

In the last 15 minutes Rob Tyson came on for Gary Savory, but even with four strikers on the pitch Overton could not get any more. QK scored a late consolation goal, but maybe Roger Budd the keeper had gone in, he was that bored!

Laverstock & Ford defeated Ludgershall Sports with a 3-0 win at Astor Crescent, meaning the side, who contain many second-string Salisbury City players, are still many people's favourites for the division title.

Elsewhere in the Hampshire league, there was a win for Andover New Street, who overcame Brading Town 4-2 at Foxcotte Park to put their recent league jitters behind them; meanwhile, Stockbridge annihilated Amesbury Town by a margin of seven goals to two.
