GLYNN TROMANS produced the finest run in the 19-year history of the Eastleigh 10K when he shattered the race record last weekend with a blistering piece of front running.

Tromans, from Coventry Godiva AC, was in a class of his own around the streets of Eastleigh as he relegated the rest of Sunday's field to also-rans. The 34-year-old, who was using the race as a final warm-up for the World Cross Country Championships in Lausanne, Switzerland, this weekend, sprinted home in a time of 28min 39sec - almost three minutes ahead of the second man, James Baker of Chichester Runners AC. Mike Boyle, of Herne Hill Harriers, finished third, 10 seconds behind. This year's race, run in near-perfect conditions, was always going to produce a record because an amended course was being used. But Tromans also wiped 13 seconds off the record for the old course, which was set back in 1989. The 19th running of the event produced 1,350 entries and race director Malcolm Price said up to 400 would-be entries had to be turned away. A total of 1,066 runners completed the course, which this year missed out the Southampton Road and Leigh Road section through the town centre to avoid causing traffic hold-ups. Winner of the women's race was Caroline Hoyte, of Arena 80 AC, in 34min 19sec. The race doubled as the Hampshire 10K Championship; the winner of the county title was Michael Twomey, of Southampton Running Club, seventh home in the main race in a time of 31min 54sec. The county women's title went to Amanda Proctor, of Basingstoke and Mid Hants AC. She clocked 35min 16sec, a time which gave her second place in the main women's race.
