Laverstock and Ford completed an astonishing derby double over Broughton to keep their Hampshire League Division 2 title hopes burning brightly on Saturday.

The Salisbury outfit began the day on the same goal difference as leaders Overton, who were in pole position thanks to a having scored more goals.

Laverstock manager Andy Wykes said: "I told the players to go out and try and get as many goals as possible and they responded brilliantly.

"Last time we played Broughton we put 11 past them and this completes a 20-goal double which is really something.

"The strange thing is that I warned the players to expect a much tougher game because Broughton have changed their manager since we played them and their results have been much better."

Laverstock turned up the power early on and after taking a four-goal lead just before half-time, Broughton lost their cool and had a man sent off. It was all downhill after then as Graham Mankin, Toby Giles and Martin Eyres, with two goals each, were joined by Ross Nicol, Dominic Male and Nick Newman on the score sheet.

Overton were without a game on Saturday so Laverstock now lead them by three points.

Hedge End leapt up into second place with an impressive 6-1 derby win at Hamble Club where, after a low-key first-half, they went into overdrive and won with goals from Matt Davies, Lee Harrison, Paul Masters (penalty) and Greg Clarke. John McFarland topped things nicely off with a two-goal flourish.

Hayling and Colden Common's Division 1 summit meeting was a victim of the weather so Paulsgrove and Verwood took advantage to keep their title prospects bubbling.

Jodie Howard, Jason House and Martin Whitaker lifted Paulsgrove to a 3-0 derby victory over Clanfield and a strike from Wayne Wanklin, midway through the first half, gave Verwood the nod in a tight game against a much improved Tadley side.

Paulsgrove's reserve side can still catch Colden Common Reserves for the Combination 1 title after Common slipped up 2-0 at home to Hythe and Dibden.

Winchester City's remorseless drive towards the Premier Division title continued with a 6-0 drubbing of Ringwood, who had spoilt Andover New Street's long unbeaten run the week before. But they were no match for City whose strikers, Andy Forbes and Ian Mancey, bagged two goals apiece. Mark Blake and Danny Smith got the others.

New Street went down again at Vosper Thornycroft where Andy Pattison had a terrific game. He made a great solo run to set up Jason Hurst for the first goal then got on the end of a cross following a corner to nod the second in a 2-1 win for Vosper.

It was a bad day for Horndean who had goalkeeper Gary Martin stretchered off with a broken leg at Poole. Hordnean still managed to come away with a goalless draw.
