If Chinese food is your thing, then look no further than the Cellar Peking in Winchester.

As the name suggests the restaurant is down in a cellar, and this adds a little charm to the already vibrant atmosphere that is complemented by first-class service and superb food from a wide-ranging menu that should leave no one disappointed.

If the appetisers don't get your juices flowing, then the main course certainly will. There's plenty of seafood on offer including prawns, sea bass, cod, scallops and squid. Duck, beef, chicken and pork dishes will tempt meat-eaters and vegetarians are also well catered for.

The seven options on the set menu are great value and the Hong Kong special is what we decided to go for.

The starter was a platter of sesame toast, spare ribs, crispy seaweed and spring rolls. The spare ribs were coated in a barbecue sauce but my favourite was the wonderful-tasting spring rolls.

That was followed up by a fantastic crispy duck which was taken off the bone before being served up. Strips of onions, cucumber and a plum sauce provided the perfect accompaniment to a delicious dish.

But the main dishes were the coup de grce. Sweet and sour chicken balls with a breadcrumb-style coating and sauce was full of flavour - the best of the three main dishes. The sizzling beef with ginger and onions was very tender - the ginger giving it a nice edge - and the stir-fried mixed vegetables with baby corn, broccoli and mangetout offered a nice alternative to the two meat dishes.

Nice though the dessert menu looked, anything more would have been pure greed!

The bill came to a shade under £40 and was excellent value for money.
