IF your working day involves sitting in an office surrounded by constantly ringing telephones, then the Black Dog is the perfect place to escape to for a bit of peace and quiet.

The tranquil setting on the edge of the Meon Valley does help but more importantly your mobile phone will probably refuse to work because there is barely any signal in the pub.

This is not the only notable feature about the pub/restaurant. The outside of the building is absolutely covered in a stunning floral display and the inside has recently been enlarged to accommodate a dining area. The additional eating area hasn't detracted from the charming country pub feel though.

And, one more unmissable feature is, of course, the food.

I last reviewed the Black Dog about two years ago and raved about the delicious home-cooked lasagne - the best non-Italian restaurant one I had ever tasted. I was pleased to see, despite the re-vamp of the building and the menu, the dish was still on the 'new improved' menu. It was fate. I had to have it to see if it was just as good. And I can report it was still just as marvellous. It still came with heaps of melted cheese, tasty meat and creamy white sauce. I opted for a portion of garlic bread and salad to accompany it, which were both very good.

My companion chose chicken and bacon melt - a tender breast of chicken draped in bacon in a delicious sauce. To accompany this, he had a selection of freshly cooked vegetables and more than enough new potatoes.

For once I felt like having a dessert and ice-cream seemed like a good idea on this warm summer's eve. Strawberry or toffee sundae were the choices. I plumped for toffee flavour which was ok. Although it was one of the ready-prepared variety which was a shame after such a wonderful home-cooked main course.
