FREEDOM Caf is a straight-friendly gay bar that promotes the up-and-coming gay scene in Southampton as well as equal rights across the spectrum.

Fridays are being introduced as "swing your handbag" nights with Freedom's new resident DJ Mike playing chart remixes and classic cheese, old and new.

Resident DJ Matty's booze boogie on Saturday night provides a heavy combination of banging dance anthems and Matty's lethal range of alcopops. He also plays uplifting funky tunes on Sunday's "raise the roof" nights.

The popular pre-club venue is divided into three areas and has a quaint little beer garden where there are barbecues most Sunday afternoons during the summer.

In the main bar there is a metallic, futuristic theme and a nicely-lit drinks area.

The chill-out room has a clean, modern design with soft lighting, futons, wooden floors and a relaxing atmosphere.

Upstairs is the coffee bar with a wide range of reasonably-priced food. This is a lovely wooden furnished room with plants and huge windows looking out onto the derelict church opposite. It is free to hire for private parties, with DJs available to play.

The welcome is remarkably friendly and owner Lee says she often introduces her customers to one another.

Customers have come as their favourite pop stars, tarts and vicars and Greek gods and goddesses for the theme nights that occur every six to eight weeks.

Freedom Caf has recently celebrated its first birthday party and its future looks bright in Southampton. It is a fun, friendly bar that celebrates diversity.
